Over 15 schools in Bengaluru received anonymous bomb threats via email on Friday, December 1, 2023, sending shockwaves through the city and prompting a swift response from authorities. The threats, which appeared to be part of a coordinated hoax, caused widespread panic among students, parents, and school administrators. Police immediately evacuated students and staff from the affected schools, while Bomb Disposal Squads were deployed to conduct thorough searches of the premises.
Wave of Threats Hits Bengaluru Schools
The first wave of threats struck seven schools, including prominent institutions like Napel and Vidyashilpa in Basaveshwar Nagar. Notably, one of the targeted schools is situated opposite the residence of Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar. Expressing concern, Shivakumar shared, “I was watching TV, the school opposite to my house also got a threat mail. I came here to check.” Despite initial indications of a potential threat, Shivakumar urged caution.
Escalation of Threats
Following the initial wave, several more educational institutions across the city received similar menacing emails. In response, Bengaluru Police swiftly initiated evacuations of students and staff as a precautionary measure. Despite the likelihood of the bomb threats being hoaxes, police, aided by Bomb Disposal Squads, are conducting thorough searches, with no confirmation of actual explosives as of now.
Government’s Assurance
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah assured the public, “Police will investigate, and I have directed them to do so. Security measures have been taken, and parents need not panic.
” He further stated, “I have instructed the police to inspect the schools and enhance security. A preliminary report has been received from the police department.”
Police Response and Investigation
The Bengaluru Police Commissioner reassured the public via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Certain schools in Bengaluru city have received emails today morning indicating ‘bomb threat’… The calls seem to be a hoax. Even then, all efforts will be made to trace the culprits.” While acknowledging the similarity to last year’s incidents, where email threats turned out to be false alarms, the police are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation.
