Bihar Caste Survey: The controversial caste-based census conducted by the Bihar government is now complete. The Chief Secretary presented the report today. The survey, which was carried out while Nitish Kumar was in office, has been the subject of heated discussion and judicial review.
More than 19% are Scheduled Castes:
Over 13 crore people were surveyed in the Bihar caste-based survey, also known as the Bihar Jaati Adharit Ganana. According to a thorough analysis, the severely backward class makes up 36% of the population, while the backward class accounts for 27%. More than 19% are Scheduled Castes, and 1.68% are Scheduled Tribes. Savarnas, the higher castes, make up 15.52% of the population.

Development Commissioner Vivek Singh, whose responsibilities fall within the authority of the Chief Secretary, presided over the news conference to make these results public. The Bihar government claimed that the caste-based survey was essential for social justice despite legal challenges and resistance from several political parties. The exercise was not stopped by the Supreme Court, allowing the state to go ahead with its objectives.
