Bihar News: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the construction of a state-of-the-art, six-lane high-level bridge over the Ganga on Wednesday, December 27, marking a major step towards improving connectivity and promoting economic growth in Bihar. The bridge will span 4.56 km.
Cabinet Approval for High-Level Bridge
Nitin Gadkari Tweeted, “The #UnionCabinet, chaired by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji, approved the construction of a 6-Lane High-Level/Extra Dosed Cable Stayed Bridge across River Ganga (Parallel to the Western Side of the Existing Digha-Sonepur Rail-Cum Road Bridge) and its approaches on both sides in the Districts of Patna and Saran (NH-139W) in the state of Bihar. The project spans 4556 meters and is valued at ₹3064.45 crore.” He added that, “Facilitating direct connectivity from Patna to the Golden Quadrilateral corridor, the bridge links NH-139 at Aurangabad and Sonepur (NH-31), Chhapra, Motihari (East-West corridor NH-27), and Bettiah (NH-727) in Northern Bihar. Integral to the Buddha Circuit, it enhances access to the Buddha Stupa at Vaishali and Keshariya. NH-139W also links to the Areraj Someshwar Nath Temple and the proposed Virat Ramayan Mandir, the world’s largest religious monument, at Kesariya in East Champaran.”
Engineering Marvel Design
Digha and Sonepur will be seamlessly connected by this infrastructure project, revolutionising regional connectivity and transportation. The proposed bridge is expected to be a feat of engineering marvellousness. It is designed as a parallel structure on the western side of the current Digha-Sonepur Rail-Cum-Road Bridge.
Addressing Economic Bottlenecks
With a total estimated cost of ₹3,064.45 crore, including ₹2,233.81 crore for civil construction, the project will be carried out on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode. There is a bottleneck in the flow of commodities and goods because the Rail Cum Road Bridge, which currently connects Digha and Sonepur, is only designed to handle light vehicles. This financial barrier will be removed by the approved bridge, creating a reliable transit route and releasing the area’s economic potential.
