Bihar News : Shots fired during BJP event in Madhepura leaving a party worker injured, accused held

Infighting among BJP leaders in Bihar's Murliganj led to firing leaving one leader injured in leg.

Bihar News: A Bharatiya Janta Party(BJP) worker was left injured after shots were fired during an event in Murliganj of Bihar’s Madhepura district. Chaos ensued as a heated altercation between two groups turned into hurling of chairs and then resulted in opening of fire. During the firing, Sanjay Bhagat of BJP was shot in the leg and was rushed to the hospital. The accused, Pankaj Singh was identified and arrested after he shot several rounds. The shots were fired from a licensed pistol owned by the accused.

The accused and the injured both are leaders of BJP. The event organized in Murliganj was scheduled to be attended by prominent faces from Bihar BJP including former Deputy Chief Minister Tar Kishore Prasad and former minister Neeraj Singh Bablu. The leaders did not attend after news of dispute was relayed to them. After Bhagat was shot, the crowd started beating Pankaj while district BJP chief Deepak Kumar was also attacked upon, when he tried to control the situation. After police arrived, Pankaj was rescued from crowd and subsequently arrested for his act. The fighting started over a money dispute between Singh and Bhagat.

Shots fired in Self-Defense

The accused Pankaj Singh has stated that he shot the fires for the purpose of self defense. He said that he opened air fire in an attempt to disperse crowd and control the chaos but as fighting ensued, he was forced to open fire which led to Sanjay Bhagat being injured. The town is in a disarray after the events of day and police has started further investigation on the matter.
