Bihar Weather Update: India is currently facing a severe heatwave, with several places seeing temperatures above 50°C (122°F). The issue is made more difficult by the fact that the Lok Sabha Elections are taking place at the same time as the intense heatwave. Despite the intense heat, Bihar’s eight seats are up for election today. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in ten districts, adding to the state’s complex weather woes.
Heatwave Death Toll and Election Challenges
The heatwave in Bihar has killed over 71 people in the last three days. The Aurangabad district has been notably affected; in just two days, thirty deaths have been reported. Election duty personnel have also been impacted by the intense weather; on Friday, a polling official in the district of Bhojpur passed away due to the excessive heat.
Orange Alert for Heavy Rainfall
In 10 districts of Bihar—East Champaran, Supaul, West Champaran, Araria, Sheohar, kishanganj, Sitamarhi, Purnia, Madhubani and Katihar—the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall. It is recommended that residents stay indoors unless absolutely essential, particularly because Bihar is vulnerable to deadly lightning strikes during rainy seasons, which have happened on several occasions in the past.
Impact Beyond Bihar
Bihar is not the only place experiencing extreme heat. The high temperatures have been attributed to 67 deaths in Rajasthan and 7 in Madhya Pradesh. The heatwave’s extensive effects highlight the urgent need for relief.
Monsoon Arrival and Forecast
For Bihar, there is optimism in sight. According to the IMD, the monsoon, which would provide much-needed respite from the intense heat, may come by June 15th or possibly sooner. The monsoon of this year is predicted to arrive earlier than usual and provide the area with rainfall that is above average, providing relief to the people.
