Bulandshahr News: Five Police Officers Face Charges for Attacking Differently-Abled Man, Details

Bulandshahr News

Bulandshahr News: Officials said on Thursday that five police officers, among them a sub-inspector, had been accused for physically abusing and imprisoning a man with a disability after falsely accusing him of being involved in a crime at Jahangirabad police station in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. The victim’s sister, Nishara Khan (35), complained to the police, which led to the incident’s discovery.

Police Allegedly Assault Disabled Man Following False Helpline Call

The incident allegedly happened on the evening of June 7, 2022, when her father—who has a mental illness and is receiving treatment at Kailash hospital—dialed the UP police helpline number 112 by accident and reported an untrue occurrence. When five Jahangirabad police officers arrived, they “assaulted Nishara Khan’s differently abled brother Mohd Afsar (45)” after finding there had been no such occurrence. “My brother was sleeping with his wife and three young girls when he was involved in a car accident and lost a limb. Police broke into the home, attacked the man in front of his family, and then arrested him. They falsely accused him and sought Rs 10,000 to free him. Nishara said in her complaint that the officials challaned her brother under CrPc section 151 after he refused to pay them.

Family Files Lawsuit Against Accused Officers

The day after Afsar was released, his family went to the then-senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Bulandshahr to complain, but they were ignored. In November 2022, Afsar’s father, who was 70, died from a heart attack. Despite this, the family persisted and filed a lawsuit. The FIR was filed against the five officers with the help of the court. ASP Aditya Bansal, currently in-charge of Jahangirabad police station, told TOl, “An FIR has been registered against sub-inspector Sanjeev Kumar, head constable Jeneshwar Dayal, constable Ankush Kumar, constable Praveen Kumar and home guard Sonu Shishodia following the court’s order, under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 452 (house trespass), 323 (criminal assault), 384 (extortion), 504, and 506 (criminal intimidation). A probe is on and necessary action will be taken.”
