Chandigarh-Shimla highway opened after 12 hours of closure due to landslide, latest weather update here

The NH-5 between Chandigarh and Shimla was closed for nearly 12 hours

Chandigarh: The National Highway 5 five which was closed due to landslide in Solan district was closed for more than 12 hours. On Tuesday morning the traffic between Chandigarh and Shimla was opened after the debris had been cleared. The landslide had occurred near Jabli area. The highway is very a landslide prone zone and massive cutting for four-laning has made road more susceptible to rain induced calamity.

Meanwhile the Chandigarh-Manali highway has also been closed due to persisting heavy rainfall. Beas river is on a full swell and floods like conditions have merged in Mandi. Many parts of National Highway-3 has been damaged by flashfloods from River Beas. In Mandi a landslide in Six Mile area has further strained traffic.

Alert issued

Landslides has claimed over 18 lives in Himachal Pradesh in the last 2 days. The India Meteorological Department has issued ‘Red Orange’ and ‘Orange alert’ in different regions for the next 34 hours.

On Monday, senior IMD scientist  Sandeep Kumar Sharma said “A red alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall in Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul for the next 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued in Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Chamba. A flash flood warning has been issued for Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti for the next 24 hours,”

IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to continue in the state.
