Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) petition, allowing the state police to investigate the broader conspiracy behind the 2013 Jheeram Ghati attack. Describing the attack as the largest political massacre in Chhattisgarh’s history, Baghel expressed gratitude for the court’s decision, opening the doors of justice for the state.
Supreme Court Rejects NIA Plea
The Jheeram Ghati attack in 2013 claimed the lives of 32 people, including senior Congress leaders such as Nand Kumar Patel, Vidya Charan Shukla, and Mahendra Karma. Despite previous investigations by the NIA and an inquiry commission, the political conspiracy aspect remained unexplored. Baghel highlighted that when the Chhattisgarh Police initiated the investigation into the larger conspiracy, the NIA sought to impede it. With the Supreme Court’s decision, Baghel asserted that the path is now clear for the Chhattisgarh Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
The Maoist attack on a Congress convoy in Jheeram valley, Bastar district, Darbha area, on May 25, 2013, resulted in the death of 29 people. The case was initially lodged by the Bastar police at Darbha police station. The NIA took over the case and filed a charge sheet. The Supreme Court’s dismissal of the NIA’s plea marks a significant development in allowing Chhattisgarh Police to delve into the political conspiracy behind the tragic incident.
