In response to continuous heavy rainfall in various districts of Tamil Nadu, the Chennai district collector has declared a holiday for schools in the city on Wednesday. The impact of the downpour has led to school closures in other affected regions, including Villupuram, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam. Furthermore, educational institutions in the Union territory of Puducherry’s Karaikal have also been directed to remain closed.
IMD’s Weather Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert forecasting ongoing rainfall in Chennai and neighboring districts. A specific Orange Alert has been issued for coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) on November 13th and 14th. The public is advised to stay safe and stay informed.
Wider Regional Impact
Beyond Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Met department has extended its predictions to include light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The alert serves as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety amid adverse weather conditions.
