Chhattisgarh Assembly Election 2023: A day after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s name surfaced in a probe related to the Mahadev betting app, the BJP has launched an attack on the Congress, alleging the use of ‘illegal money’ to finance their campaign for the upcoming state assembly polls.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress government, stating that they haven’t even spared the name of ‘Mahadev.’
Enforcement Directorate investigating the case:
Baghel is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, following allegations from a courier who claimed he was instructed to deliver ₹5 crore to a politician named ‘Baghel’ and that the Mahadev app promoters had paid ₹508 crore to Mr. Baghel.
The probe is ongoing, and the allegations have not been independently verified. PM Modi promised action against the accused once the BJP forms the government in the state, vowing to investigate and prosecute those involved in such scams.
Use of hawala money for election campaign:
Union Minister Smriti Irani also accused the Congress of using ‘hawala’ money for their campaign. Hawala is an informal money transfer method that operates without physical cash, and the Mahadev app allegedly conducted large-scale hawala operations to move betting proceeds to offshore accounts.
Baghel has denied the allegations and accused the ED of trying to tarnish his image before the elections, suggesting that the BJP is using central investigation agencies out of fear. The Congress has expressed support for its Chief Minister and believes the people will respond in the upcoming elections.
“This means that the BJP is afraid and wants to tarnish my image by accusing me. The (BJP) used to blame Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ajit Pawar. They even make the investigation happen. But when they join your party, they get washed with ‘Modi Washing Powder’ and they get cleaned,” Baghel said.
