Cyclone Dana: Both West Bengal and Odisha are on high alert as Cyclone Dana approaches their coastlines. Over the Bay of Bengal, the storm is intensifying and causing extensive disruption. To safeguard people and property, governments have increased their preparedness. Authorities are implementing stringent measures to reduce damage as wind gusts of up to 120 km/h are predicted.
Trains Cancelled as Cyclone Dana Approaches
To prepare for the cyclone’s arrival, Eastern and South Eastern Railways have cancelled over 170 trains. This includes both express and passenger services. The cancellations will affect routes on October 24 and 25. Authorities have warned that more trains might be stopped if the storm intensifies. Travelers in Odisha and West Bengal are urged to stay updated with train schedules. Making alternative arrangements is advised for those planning to travel. Safety is the main priority.
Flights Cancelled Across Major Cities
Air travel is also severely disrupted. All flights in and out of Kolkata and Bhubaneswar will be suspended starting Thursday evening. The suspension will continue until Friday morning. Given the intensity of the cyclone, grounding flights is the safest option. Passengers should stay in touch with airlines for updates on cancellations or rescheduling. It’s best to avoid travel during this period unless necessary.
Schools Shut in Affected Areas
To ensure safety, schools in several districts of West Bengal and Odisha are closed. The West Bengal School Education Department has suspended classes in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas. These closures will remain until October 26. Similarly, Odisha has shut schools in vulnerable coastal areas. Heavy rains and flooding are expected once the cyclone makes landfall. Keeping students and staff safe is the primary concern.
West Bengal and Odisha on High Alert
Both West Bengal and Odisha are fully on alert as Cyclone Dana approaches. The cyclone could make landfall on October 25. Mass evacuations are underway in coastal areas. Up to 10 lakh people may be evacuated from high-risk zones in both states. Low-lying areas are especially prone to flooding. Rescue teams, disaster management units, and emergency services have been deployed. Shelters are being prepared for evacuees.
Helplines and Emergency Measures in Place
Both Odisha and West Bengal have set up emergency helplines. Residents can report issues like power outages or flooding. The Odisha power department has provided helplines: 8900793503, 19221 (WBSEDCL), and 1912 (CESC). Residents in affected areas should keep these numbers handy. Avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. The safety of citizens remains the top priority for authorities.
