Cyclone Michaung: As a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday strengthened into cyclonic storm “Michaung,” which is expected to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Heavy Rainfall Causes Severe Waterlogging in Chennai
Because of the heavy rain, severe waterlogging was reported in Chennai. In Guduvanchery, boat services have begun operating. Parts of Chennai experienced severe waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. Vadapalani’s roads flooded.
Cyclone Speeds Northwest in the Bay of Bengal
Cyclone Michaung is travelling at a speed of 13 km/h as it moves north-westward in the south-west Bay of Bengal, according to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Agency. At present, the distances are 150 km to Chennai, 250 km to Nellore, 360 km to Bapat, and 380 km to Machilipatnam. Today, the storm will track parallel to the coast. Michaung, a strong storm, is expected to make landfall on Tuesday afternoon between Nellore and Machilipatnam.
Madras High Court Declares Holiday Amid Persistent Rain
Because of the persistent rain, the Madras High Court on Monday declared a holiday for all Chennai courts. Depending on the circumstances in their respective districts, the principal district judges of Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpet will make a decision. Chennai was battered by heavy rain all night, and several low-lying areas are reportedly experiencing waterlogging. Waterlogging caused 14 of the city’s subways to close to traffic. Eleven trees that fell from high winds have been taken down.
