Delhi Rains: On Tuesday morning, heavy rain lashes cut a swathe across parts of the national capital, resulting in extensive waterlogging. The rain, accompanied by thundershowers, drenched the roads, with traffic crawling because of jams and vehicles being submerged in waterlogged areas.
Autorickshaw Submerged in Waterlogged Delhi Streets
A video going viral on social media captured just how grave the situation was: an autorickshaw got completely submerged in a waterlogged road. It was a harrowing experience, recounted the autorickshaw driver, Munil Mehto. “My vehicle suddenly stopped. I asked a few drivers to help me.To save my life I came out of the auto. The vehicle’s paper is still in it,” he said, expressing concern about the important documents left inside his submerged vehicle.
The morning rain did much to dispel the oppression of heat and humidity that had been prevailing in the city since quite a while. The relief turned out to be short-lived as the heavy downpour caused severe waterlogging and traffic congestion. The major areas affected were Ashram Bridge and Minto Road. At Ashram Bridge, because of the waterlogging, there was huge traffic disruption. On Minto Road, parked vehicles could be seen submerged in water, giving an idea of the intensity of rainfall.
IMD Forecasts Continued Light Rain in Delhi Until Saturday
The India Meteorological Department has said that light rain in the capital will continue till Saturday. On Tuesday, the IMD predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall across Delhi and southwest NCR, stating that a moderate-to-intense spell can occur in Central and East Delhi during the morning hours.
The IMD issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarakhand and warned of heavy rainfall over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. At isolated areas in these states, thunderstorms and lightning have also been forecast, indicating that really the monsoon is in full swing across northern India.
Though the rain brought temporary relief from the heat, it brought to the fore the vulnerability of the city to waterlogging and how the city was quite incapable of managing such weather events.
