Delhi NCR News: As air quality forecasts predict an imminent deterioration in air pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management has activated GRAP-2 (Graded Response Action Plan) restrictions in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to combat the situation.
Measures to Address Rising Pollution
- Ban on Coal and Wood-Fired Stoves: One of the key measures under GRAP-2 is the enforcement of a ban on the use of coal and wood-fired stoves.
- Promotion of Cleaner Transportation: To encourage cleaner modes of transportation, the frequency of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and electric buses will be increased.
- Dust Suppression and Traffic Management: The authorities will oversee regular road cleaning and dust suppression by sprinkling water. Traffic police personnel will also manage traffic flow to reduce congestion and lower pollution levels.
- Hiked Parking Fees: As part of Stage II of the pollution control plan, parking fees will be increased to discourage private transport and promote the use of CNG/electric bus and metro services.
Proactive Response to Pollution Threat
- With forecasts suggesting a transition to ‘very poor’ air quality on October 23 and 24 due to unfavorable meteorological conditions, GRAP-2 restrictions will be instrumental in mitigating air pollution.
- The Commission for Air Quality Management has invoked these measures across the entire NCR as part of Stage II of GRAP in response to the projections.
GRAP Stages Based on AQI
- The Graded Response Action Plan classifies actions into four stages based on the Air Quality Index (AQI), addressing pollution concerns at different levels.
- Stage I is triggered in ‘Poor’ conditions, while Stage II, as invoked now, focuses on ‘Very Poor’ AQI levels. Stage III and Stage IV are reserved for ‘Severe’ and ‘Severe Plus’ AQI levels, respectively, implementing further stringent measures.
By activating these GRAP-2 restrictions, authorities aim to proactively combat rising pollution and safeguard public health in the region.
