Delhi News: On Wednesday, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) renamed Aurangzeb Lane located in Lutyens Delhi to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane. The NDMC made the decision after consensus was given in the meeting of its members. In 2015 NDMC had renamed Aurangzeb Road to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road and consequentially Adul Kalam Lane will now connect to Prithivi Raj Road.
Controversy over Aurangzeb Road
Aurangzeb, the last great Mughal Emperor has been a subject of controversy and has polarizing presence in history books. In 2015, Muslim groups had objected to NDMC‘s decision to rename Aurangzeb Road to Abdul Kalam Road.
Dr S Q R Ilyas, President of Welfare Party of India told PTI ‘They have a long list of cities/roads named after some historical figures or Muslim Emperors, which they want to change,’
Many claim deliberate attempts to alter and reorchestrate popular chapters of Indian history are in place.
Historians contend as well
A section of historians has been vocal against renaming of places as it misrepresents reason behind naming of the place.
Historian Narayani Gupta has said “So, just removing a historic name doesn’t augur well. Moreso, when it has history behind the naming. And, a true tribute to Kalam would have been a science museum for children, and not some renamed signpost.
