Delhi Weather Update: The national capital continued to endure sweltering conditions on Thursday, with the maximum temperature soaring to 45.6 degrees Celsius, a significant 5.2 degrees above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks the fourth consecutive day of heatwave conditions in Delhi.
Delhi Sizzles Under Heatwave
The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded its second-highest maximum temperature of the summer season so far. This follows a record-breaking high of 46.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the highest temperature in 79 years. The previous record was 46.7 degrees Celsius, set on June 17, 1945.
Temperature Reaches 45.6°C
Mungeshpur, an area in Delhi, experienced an unprecedented high of 52.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the highest temperature recorded in the country. The IMD has since announced that they are examining the sensors and data from the area’s weather station for potential errors, though no report on the inspection has been issued yet.
On Thursday, Delhi remained under an Orange alert due to the extreme temperatures. Notable highs included 49 degrees Celsius in Mungeshpur and Najafgarh, 49.2 degrees Celsius in Narela, and 48.4 degrees Celsius in Pitampura.
In a bit of relief, the IMD has forecasted light rains and drizzles for Delhi on Friday, attributing this to a new weather disturbance expected to affect North India. This could provide some respite from the relentless heat that has gripped the capital over the past week.
As Delhi grapples with this intense heatwave, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
