Delhi Weather Update: For the third day in a row, thick fog covered Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), severely limiting sight and disrupting air, ground and transportation services. Flight delays resulted from the national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) recording at least zero visibility at night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Traveller Advisory in Response to Heavy Fog
Due to the heavy fog, the Delhi airport sent out a traveller advisory at night. It stated, “While landing and takeoffs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.”
Enhancing Aircraft Landing in Low Visibility
A notable feature of the CAT III instrument is its anti-fog landing system, which aids in aircraft landing in reduced visibility. It permits landing in as little as 50 metres of sight. The thick fog also caused delays for a number of trains that were departing or travelling towards the national capital.
Similar circumstances were observed in the nation’s capital on Tuesday, affecting multiple planes as well as 19 trains headed for Delhi. Due to a western disturbance in the Himalayan region, the meteorological service has forecast light rainfall in the nation’s capital. IMD predicts that Delhi will have two days of mild rain on Wednesday and Thursday.
IMD’s Weather Advisory
“Dense to very dense fog in the morning and light rain or thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds towards evening or night,” the IMD’s bulletin said. On Tuesday, Delhi’s lowest temperature was 10 degrees Celsius, while the highest temperature is probably going to reach 19 degrees.
IMD Reports Dense to Extremely Dense Fog
According to the IMD, there was dense to extremely dense fog throughout Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan in addition to Delhi-NCR. “Cold day conditions at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorm/Lightning at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir And Himachal Pradesh,” the weather department added.
