Kanwar Yatra 2023: In the early hours of Thursday, a devastating accident occurred on the GT Karnal road in Delhi, claiming the lives of four ‘Kanwariyas‘, devotees of Lord Shiva, and leaving 15 others injured.
Terrible Collision on GT Karnal Road
Around 00:44 AM, the police received a distress call. Upon their arrival at the scene, they discovered a horrifying sight. A truck packed with Kanwar pilgrims was hit by another vehicle, resulting in a terrible accident. The pilgrims were en route to Haridwar from Mianwali Nagar, situated near Nangloi in the capital.
Truck Driver Fled Following The Accident
Preliminary investigation suggested that the second truck, which was heading towards Delhi, inadvertently crossed the central divider on the GT Karnal road and crashed into the truck transporting the ‘Kanwariyas’. Tragically, four pilgrims lost their lives on the spot, while 15 others were grievously injured. The driver responsible for the mishap is currently absconding, police reports confirm.
Urgent Medical Attention for The Injured
Five of those injured were quickly transported to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital located in Jahangirpuri, while an additional fourteen were sent immediately to the Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela. Tragically, four individuals were pronounced deceased upon arrival. Furthermore, two individuals, who were critically injured, were shifted to the Balaji Action Centre situated in Paschim Vihar.
Investigation in Progress, Road Cleared for Traffic
A legal matter has been lodged at the Alipur Police Station and probing into the incident is presently underway.Despite the tragic event, the road has now been cleared for vehicular movement, ensuring minimal disruption to the public.
As per the annual tradition, the Kanwar Yatra started on July 4, attracting Lord Shiva’s devotees from across the nation. They set out on a spiritual journey to Haridwar, aiming to collect holy water from the Ganga. However, the pilgrimage for some devotees met a tragic end this year. The entire country empathises with the sorrow of the affected families, ardently wishing for a rapid recovery of the injured individuals, and a prompt dispensation of justice.
