Ajit Pawar: The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) said today that NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who has been sworn in as Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister, will shortly replace Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Ajit Pawar shocked his uncle Sharad Pawar, who formed the NCP 24 years ago, by leading a vertical split in the party to become deputy chief minister. In addition, eight NCP leaders were sworn in as ministers in the Shinde-BJP administration.
Shiv Sena Editorial Slams BJP
According to an editorial in the Shiv Sena (UBT) newspaper ‘Saamana,’ the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has not only “muddied” Maharashtra politics, but also national politics. “Ajit Pawar has a made a record of taking oath as deputy chief minister. This time the ‘deal’ is strong,” it said. “Pawar has not gone there for the deputy CM’s post. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and rebel MLAs of the Sena would be disqualified soon and Pawar would be coronated,” it added. This new development will not be well received by the citizens of the state. It stated that the state had no such political tradition and that it would never be supported by the people. According to the Marathi daily, Ajit Pawar’s somersault is extremely perilous for Chief Minister Shinde. It stated that when Shinde and other MLAs left the Shiv Sena, they accused party president and (then) chief minister Uddhav Thackeray for not managing then finance minister Ajit Pawar, who had acquired enormous control over fund disbursement and work order sanctioning. “The primary reason according to the rebel MLAs was ‘we left the Shiv Sena because of the NCP’,” the editorial said.
Editorial Criticizes Shinde Bloc’s Bleak Future After Ajit Pawar’s Swearing-In
‘What are they going to do now? During Ajit Pawar’s swearing-in ceremony on Sunday, the expressions on their faces (of Shinde bloc members) made it clear that their future is bleak,’ it claimed. “Their so-called Hindutva is now over. The day is not very far when Shinde and his rebel colleagues will be disqualified, is the true meaning of Sunday’s development,” the Marathi publication further claimed. ‘Those who have power arrogance and believe they can buy out their opponents are seizing control of democracy. These people aren’t even ready to hold elections for the state’s 14 municipal corporations, including Mumbai,’ it claimed. “The (previous) Congress regime and the British rule were much better as one could fight with them on the street openly. Ajit Pawar has not taken the decision to support Shinde on any moral ground,” it added. The editorial also attacked BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging he had claimed they would never work with the NCP, “the party of corrupts,” and that Ajit Pawar was facing allegations in a 70,000 crore irrigation scam. “This swearing-in has exposed the BJP’s true face,” it claimed. Refusing to accept that the events of Sunday were a surprise to everyone, the editorial asserted that some people were well aware of the “earthquake.” “What happened to the Shiv Sena a year ago is now happening to the NCP. As NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, there will be a new day tomorrow,” the editorial said, ‘It was not an earthquake, but rather small tremors,’ it added.
