On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate conducted raid on DMK MLA from the Tirukkoyilur Assembly seat and Minister of Education in Tamil Nadu cabinet K. Ponmudi. The residences of minister in Chennai and Viluppuram in connection with money laundering case are being raided by the central agency. The raids also concerns Ponmudi’s 49-year old son Sigamani, who is Member of Parliament from Kallakurichi seat. The DMK party has termed the raids as political vendetta by the central government.
Quarry License case
The case is linked to alleged irregularities during Ponmudi’s tenure as state mining minister during 2007-11. The DMK leader is accused of violating quarry license conditions which led to a loss of 28 crore. The Tamil Nadu state police had filed a complaint against the minister and others to probe the charges of corruption. In June Sigmani filed a relief petition in the Madras High Court and the court refused to stay the trial. The court observed that there is presumption that the petitioning party has grounds for committing the offence and therefore the trial cannot be stopped.
Political Vendetta
The raids have taken place on the inaugural day of opposition parties 2 day meeting scheduled in Bengaluru. The DMK has proven to be a formidable opponent to BJP and is a staunch supporter of opposition unity. As per the DMK spokesperson A Saravanan “This is political vendetta and aimed at testing the DMK’s resolve.” He further added that center has taken no actions against AIDMK in the Guthka scandal.
