Cyclone Biparjoy: Villages close to the Gujarat coast will continue to be evacuated today as cyclone “Biparjoy” strengthened into a “extremely severe cyclonic storm.” On Thursday afternoon, it is anticipated to make landfall somewhere between Kutch and Karachi, Pakistan.
Evacuation Plans Initiated in Gujarat’s Vulnerable Districts
A meeting of the disaster management ministers of the states and Union Territories was presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah this morning. After yesterday’s high-level Cyclone Biparjoy review meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi instructed officials to take all reasonable steps to ensure that residents of susceptible areas are safely evacuated. Last night, PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel spoke on the phone to discuss the cyclone’s progress. According to Patel, he inquired about the state’s readiness and pledged all available assistance. According to officials, the evacuation of residents from Gujarat’s Kutch and Saurashtra districts’ villages that are less than 10 kilometres from the coast will start today. According to them, about 7,500 residents of low-lying districts close to the coast have already been relocated to safer locations.
Coastal Districts Brace for Heavy Rains and High Wind Speeds
In the two districts, a cyclone notice has already been issued. “Sea conditions along and off Saurashtra and Kutch coasts will likely remain rough to very rough” through Wednesday, and very rough to high on Thursday, they have stated. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts are expected to be affected by the cyclone with heavy rains and very high wind speeds between June 13 and 15, which may reach 150 kmph. According to Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey, twelve teams each of the national and state disaster forces have been dispatched, and plans have been made for people who have been evacuated to have a place to stay, food to eat, and medicine. In addition, ships from the Indian Coast Guard are monitoring the coast while the Army and Navy are on alert.

Mumbai Faces Strong Seas and Train Services Disrupted Ahead of Cyclone Biparjoy
Yesterday, a boy drowned close to Mumbai’s Juhu beach, while two other children were saved. Search efforts are ongoing as two more boys are missing. Due to the approaching cyclone, Mumbai experienced strong seas and violent waves at several of its beaches yesterday. Fishing is not recommended in the seas along the coasts of Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Lakshadweep, according to the IMD. Ports are also mandated by international maritime law to hoist signals that will notify vessels of oncoming bad weather. As the cyclone is anticipated to make landfall in southwest Rajasthan on Friday, the North Western Railway has cancelled a few trains, according to officials. Furthermore, the Western Railway is considering cancelling a number of trains over the next three days after short-terminating over 50 trains yesterday that were headed for Gujarat’s coastal regions. To maintain smooth rail operation, Railways has activated a disaster management room and opened emergency control rooms in a number of Gujarati districts. Bangladesh gave the storm the Bengali name “Biparjoy,” which translates as “calamity” in English. The name was accepted by the nations of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 2020, according to the IMD website.
