Vadodara: A father from Garbada in the Dahod district carried out the post-death rites for his 18-year-old daughter after she wed a young man of her choosing outside of caste. The ceremonies were executed on Friday in front of a small group of people, and they included using a garlanded photo of the girl even though she is still alive. The father went to great lengths to keep her away from their Brahmin family.
Private Funeral Rites for Daughter Who Married Against Caste Norms
Only her father and a few other family members and members of their caste were present for the funeral rites. The girl is no longer a member of their upper caste family, the father emphasised, hence it is crucial for him to carry out the ceremonies. According to the information, the girl had vanished on May 16 while visiting a family in Banswara in Rajasthan. Her family made an effort to locate her, and when they were unsuccessful, they called the police. About two weeks later, the girl went back and gave the Garbada police a statement. She claimed that she was getting married of her own free will before she and her spouse fled Garbada. The father stated, “We performed the ‘uttarkriya’ as we no longer want to have anything to do with her,” and added that he was not under any duress from caste members or others to carry out the ceremonies. She left us, but we still need to function in society,” he continued.
Limited Options Available Due to Legal Adulthood
According to Garbada police sub-inspector Jagdish Patel, the family reported the missing girl in applications at Banswara and then Garbada. “She later visited us with the young man and said that they were wed. There wasn’t much we could do about them because they were adults. We told her parents, who had also been to visit her, he continued.
