Flashflood warnings issued for 5 districts of Himachal Pradesh.

The Indian Meteorological Department’s office in Shimla has issued “Moderate to high risk” caution for flash floods in major districts of Himachal Pradesh. The warnings pertain to 5 out of 12 districts in the state, namely Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Chamba and Sirmaour. The risk of flashfloods across in few water bodies will remain till 17th July.

THe IMD had already issued ‘Orange Alert’ in view of predicted heavy showers for 2 days which will gradually recede with time. Rainfalls in this monsoon has made life difficult with flashfloods claiming roads, houses, bridges and other significant pieces of infrastructure . The state has also been severely affected by major incidents of landslides in different regions. As per official data 108 people have lost their lives in rainfall induced incidents this year.

Relief for Himachal

On July 10, the central government released the first package of planned 180.40 crore relief money to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The fund is provided to enhance relief work being provided to the flood affected populace in Himachal. On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah approved the advance release of Rs 180 crore as the central share to flood affected regions of the state.

A total of 11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are also stationed in Himachal in order to provide state authorities assistance in carrying out relief work being provided.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also deployed Column of 1 PARA SF and 205 Army Aviation Squadron for a civil evacuation mission at Poanta Sahib in Sirmaour district.

“The Central Government has also constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs), to make an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and relief works being carried out by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh. The IMCT would commence their field visits on July 17.”
