Gangster-Politician’s Atiq Ahmed Custodial Death, PIL Demands Investigation by Supreme Court

Atiq Ahmed: On April 24, the Supreme Court will hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting an investigation into the deaths of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother, Ashraf, while they were in police custody.

Cameras were present throughout the entire incident

Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-politician, and his brother, Ashraf, were being taken for a medical examination from a Prayagraj last Saturday night when three shooters—Arun Kumar Maurya, Lovelesh Tiwari, and Sunny Singh—came dressed as media personnel and shot them dead. They were in police custody and were using Zigana pistols. Cameras were present throughout the entire incident. They had paused briefly to respond to inquiries.

14-day judicial custody

Following the incident, authorities apprehended the attackers and placed them in 14-day judicial custody. Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who submitted the case, requested an immediate hearing from the court panel presided over by Justice DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India.

A retired Supreme Court judge oversee the investigation’s progress

The plea also demanded that a retired Supreme Court judge oversee the investigation’s progress. The plea also requests that an expert team, under the direction of a retired Supreme Court judge, conduct a probe into the 183 encounters that have occurred in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.
