Ghaziabad News: Over 1000 evacuated as flood-like situation arises due to increase in Hindon water level

Ghaziabad News: A flood alert has been issued in the Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad districts in Uttar Pradesh amid the rise in the water level of the Hindon River. Despite no rain for one week in Delhi-NCR, the water level of the Hindon River is swelling due to discharge from Hathnikund Barrage, following heavy rains in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. 

Flood-like situation in Ghaziabad, Noida

On Saturday night, after the water from the Hindon River entered various houses along the banks in Noida and Ghaziabad, an alert was issued by the police, further undertaking precautionary measures. As per media reports, over 1000 people have been evacuated from inundated areas.

“From Chhijarsi to Ecotech, water entered the houses in three low-lying areas. People were evacuated from their houses. However, the river has not crossed the danger mark anywhere yet”, said Suresh Rao A. Kulkarni, Additional Police Commissioner of Noida.

He also informed that police teams have been deployed at various locations that are at risk. After the flooding in the houses, some people have been shifted to nearby schools and ‘Barat’ houses temporarily until proper arrangements are made. “We are keeping an eye on the water level,” said Kulkarni. 

HIndon water level near danger mark 

According to Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, the discharge in the Hindon river was 13,423 cusecs, leading the water level to rise to 200.25 metres on Saturday. The danger level is set at 205.8 metres.

“An unexpected increase in water discharge has flooded several upstream villages such as Karhera, Ator Nagla, and Firozpur Mohan, among others. The floodplains have been submerged, and we have deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to evacuate people to safer areas. Four shelters have been prepared, and approximately 1,000 people have been relocated,” said Vinay Kumar Singh, sub-divisional magistrate (Sadar).
