Ghaziabad News: There is a conflict of interest between the Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad and the International Airport in Delhi. The Delhi High Court has been contacted by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in opposition to the intention to begin commercial flights from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad.
Hindon Airport Authorization for Commercial Flights
The Indian Air Force station in Hindon, Ghaziabad, was authorised by the central government to begin operating commercial flights a year ago through the Aviation Authority of India (AAI). The Centre and AAI have now been questioned by Justice Subramaniam Prasad over the DIAL petition that was filed in opposition to it.
Authorization for Commercial Flights at Hindon Airport
The Airports Authority of India, also known as the Aviation Authority of India (AAI), has been granted permission by the Central Government’s Civil Aviation Ministry to begin regularly scheduled commercial flights at the Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Delhi International Airport Limited is concerned as a result. It has appealed this ruling in a High Court plea, claiming that a new airport is currently under construction in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, 150 kilometres from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Even before these two airports fill up to capacity, Hindon Air Force Station is also permitted to begin commercial operations. This will have an effect on IGI Airport and decrease the usefulness of not just that airport but also the three other airports (Delhi, Hindon, and Jewar). Delhi Airport said that the October 31, 2023, decision made by the Centre was erroneous, arbitrary, and not economically feasible.
Policy Violations and Legal Irregularities
According to the petition, the National Civil Aviation Policy, the Greenfield Airport Policy, and the 1997 policy were all broken by the choice to create a greenfield airport at Hindon Air Force Station. This prohibits the construction of new airports within 150 km of already-existing ones. The new airport policy and the infrastructure strategy were decided upon without following the proper legal procedures. A competitive bidding process was intended to be used to build a second new airport.
Conflicts of Interest and Unilateral Decisions
Furthermore, the plan to operate flights from Hindon Air Force Station involves AAI, a 26 percent stakeholder in DIAL, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest. The petition demands the revocation of the contested communication, proposal, and decision pertaining to the Hindon Project.
DIAL stated in its appeal that it has made significant investments to support the growth of IGI Airport. As a result, the airport’s capacity has grown quickly. In spite of this, the Centre has acted outside the bounds of the law by making a unilateral judgement without providing an opportunity to be heard.
Authorization for Commercial Flights at Hindon
The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear this matter in March. The Aviation Authority of India and the GMR-led company jointly own DIAL. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is run by it. The exclusive rights and duties for the operation, maintenance, development, and management of this airport belong to the GMR-led partnership DIAL and AAI.
