Jammu Kashmir News

Jammu Kashmir News: The much awaited train service between Ramban and Reasi, which traverses the tallest railway bridge in the world over the Chenab River, is scheduled to start operating soon. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which Northern Railways says should be completed by the end of this year, has reached a major milestone with this breakthrough.

The Journey of the USBRL Project

Over the years, the USBRL project has made steady development. The most recent landmark was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s February 20, 2024, inauguration of the 48.1 km long Banihal-Sangaldan stretch. Inaugurated in October 2009, the Qazigund-Baramulla segment of Phase I of the project provides rail access to the northern region of Jammu & Kashmir, totaling 118 kilometres. The eighteen-kilometer Banihal-Qazigund segment was opened in June 2013. The 25 km long Udhampur-Katra stretch, which connected the significant pilgrimage town of Katra, was inaugurated in July 2014 as part of Phase III.

Transformative Impact on Nearby Regions

The people of Jammu and Kashmir will gain a great deal from the completion of the USBRL project. Significant places such as Ramban, Reasi, and the surrounding area will experience increased connectivity and economic growth. Here’s how:

  1. Boost to Tourism: The rail service would increase local tourism by making it simpler for visitors to see the religious Vaishno Devi temple and the picturesque areas of the Chenab Valley.
  2. Economic Upliftment: Better rail connectivity will make it easier to move products and services, which will significantly increase local trade and businesses.
  3. Enhanced Accessibility: The new railway sections will make it simpler for those living in rural areas to access big cities, employment opportunities, healthcare, and education.
  4. Safety and Convenience: In contrast to the frequently dangerous road trips in the hilly terrain, the contemporary train infrastructure will provide safer and more enjoyable travel.
