Farmers Protest: According to Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) chairman Rakesh Tikait, the farmers who have been blocking the national highway in Pipli, Haryana’s Kurukshetra, for more than 24 hours will now terminate their protest and reopen the blocked highways.
Farmers’ Protest in Kurukshetra Comes to an End
“Our demonstration is coming to an end. Today, the closed highways will be opened. We were demonstrating to get MSP to buy our crops. We will continue to advocate for MSP all around the nation. We will also shortly release our leaders. Rakesh Tikait assured media that the cases brought against our leaders would be dropped. After the state administration agreed to the farmers’ demand to increase sunflower seed procurement costs, the farmers in Kurukshetra halted their protest. Additionally, the charges brought against the farmer leaders will be dismissed. In addition to others, jail inmate Gurnam Singh Chaduni will also be released. They are being held by the courts. In order to get a minimum support price (MSP) for the sunflower crop and the release of nine farmer union officials who were detained during a demonstration at Shahabad last week, hundreds of farmers have blocked National Highway-44 near Pipli.
Farmers Continue Highway Blockade in Kurukshetra
Rakesh Tikait had earlier in the day stated that until the government declares MSP for the sunflower harvest, farmers will continue to block the national highway in Kurukshetra. He claimed that the local government and administration were damaging the reputation of farmer unions. “All that we are asking for is the MSP set forth by the Central Government, which is Rs. 6,400 per quintal. Why is Haryana refusing to accept it? He queried. Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police S. S. Bhoria earlier today told PTI that the district government was hoping for a solution and was attempting to convince the farmers to lift the blockade. He added that a new complaint had been filed against the protesters for blocking the national highway in accordance with the applicable legal procedures. The BKU (Charuni) organised the demonstration against “MSP Dilao, Kisan Bachao Mahapanchayat” at a grain market in Pipli adjacent to NH-44. The farmers then blocked the highway. The demonstration included farmers from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
