Haryana Violence: In light of the violence that broke out in Nuh, Sohna, and Gurugram earlier this week, a community leader has declared that Muslims in this area will not perform Friday namaz in any public spaces or mosques. In a video message, Mufti Saleem Qasmi, head of Jamiat Ulama in Gurugram, pleaded with people not to worship in public or congregate in mosques.
Muslim Community Responds to Violence with Calls for Brotherhood
According to Qasmi, maintaining brotherhood is a civic duty. The choice was made in response to the intercommunal fighting that occurred during a VHP protest on Monday in Nuh district. Following the skirmishes, there was violence that resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including a clergyman, as well as the burning of several automobiles and a restaurant.
Mufti’s Appeal for Private Namaz and Efforts for Dialogue
“I appeal to the people to offer namaz at home. Only those people who live in a masjid can offer namaz in the masjid. No one else is allowed to enter it. May Allah protect our brotherhood,” Mufti told PTI on Thursday. On Wednesday, Hindu-right organisations sent a Deputy Commissioner of Police a memorandum in which they demanded, among other things, that namaz be prohibited in public spaces. On Thursday, Nuh’s DC Prashant Panwar and SP Varun Singla met with the ulemas there and urged them to lead prayers at their residences. Ulemas promised the police there would be a public namaz.
