Bobby Kataria: In a shocking turn of events, YouTuber Bobby Kataria has been arrested by the police for allegedly trafficking young men abroad under the pretense of offering them jobs and forcing them into cyber fraud. Kataria is accused of taking lakhs of rupees from two young men from Uttar Pradesh, promising them employment in a Chinese company. Upon arrival, the men were beaten, had their passports confiscated, and were coerced into committing cyber fraud targeting Americans.
The victims, Arun Kumar from Fatehpur and Manish Tomar from Hapur, somehow managed to escape and reach the Indian Embassy, which facilitated their return to India. Following their return, they lodged a complaint with the police, leading to a raid on Kataria’s office, where Rs 20 lakhs in cash was recovered.
The young men alleged that around 150 Indians, including women, were similarly trafficked and held captive in the company. These victims were lured by agents like Kataria with false promises of lucrative jobs. The police are currently investigating these allegations.
Detailed Account of the Fraud
According to the police spokesperson, Arun Kumar and Manish Tomar had initially connected with Bobby Kataria through his YouTube channel, MBK, where they saw advertisements for overseas job opportunities. In early February 2024, Arun Kumar met Kataria at his office in Sector-109 after making contact via WhatsApp. Kataria promised him a job in the UAE, for which Arun registered by paying Rs 2,000. Subsequently, he transferred Rs 50,000 to Kataria’s company account and another Rs 1 lakh to an associate named Ankit Shaukeen in March.
Kataria arranged for Arun’s flight ticket to Laos, instructing him to exchange Rs 50,000 into US dollars at the airport. Similarly, Manish Tomar paid lakhs of rupees for a supposed job in Singapore but was also sent to Laos. Upon arrival in Vientiane, they were met by a man named Abhi, who claimed to be a Pakistani agent and a friend of Kataria.
Abhi took them to a hotel and then arranged their transport to the Golden Triangle via train and taxi. There, they were handed over to Ankit Shaukeen and Nitish Sharma, who took them to a clandestine Chinese company. Here, they were subjected to severe physical abuse and their passports were confiscated. They were then forced to engage in cyber fraud activities, targeting Americans, under threats of violence and death if they did not comply.
Police Action
Following the detailed complaint, the police have registered a case and are conducting thorough investigations. The arrest of Bobby Kataria marks a significant development in the case, and authorities are hopeful that further investigation will lead to the rescue of other victims and the dismantling of the trafficking network.
Authorities urge the public to be cautious of such fraudulent schemes and report any suspicious activities to the police.
