Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: With the objective of making a big impression in the upcoming elections for the Haryana Assembly on October 5, the Congress party has unveiled an ambitious manifesto that is full of big promises to transform the state. The Congress manifesto, which prioritises economic assistance, child welfare, and women’s empowerment, is meant to appeal to a wide range of voters.
Key Commitments in the Congress Manifesto
The Congress manifesto outlines several major commitments to address pressing issues in Haryana:
- Women Empowerment: Every woman over the age of 18 will receive Rs 2,000 per month. Additionally, LPG gas cylinders will be provided at a reduced cost of Rs 500 to ease household expenses.
- Free Electricity and Affordable Housing: The party promises 300 units of free electricity per household each month. They also propose to provide 100 yards of land to poor families to build their homes, aiming to support those in need of affordable housing.
- Enhanced Pension Schemes: Congress pledges a pension of Rs 6,000 per month for widows and disabled individuals. They also vow to reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), a contentious issue in the state.
- Job Creation and Unemployment: To tackle unemployment, the Congress has committed to filling two lakh government positions, which is expected to provide significant employment opportunities.
- Healthcare and Drug-Free State: The manifesto promises free healthcare coverage up to Rs 25 lakh and a commitment to making Haryana a drug-free state, addressing two critical areas of public concern.
- Legal Guarantees and Support for Farmers: Congress intends to conduct a caste survey and ensure a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers’ produce, providing much-needed support to the agricultural sector.
Election Strategy and Alliance Efforts
In spite of its inability to form an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress party is concentrating on a straight campaign in an attempt to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana. In an attempt to prevent splitting votes, Congress first explored forming an alliance, but talks broke down due to differences in seat distribution. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will have a candidate in Bhiwani, while Congress will compete for 89 seats.
Election Day Details
On October 5, there will be a single phase of the Haryana Assembly elections involving 90 constituencies. The results are expected on October 8. Over 20 million people are eligible to vote, including 467 transsexual voters, 10.78 million men, and 9.57 million women.
