Gurugram News: Shri A. Sreenivas, Chief Executive Officer, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) today convened a co-ordination meeting in the GMDA office to discuss the flood preparedness measures for the upcoming monsoon season. Present in the meeting were Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram, Shri Hitesh Meena, Administrator HSVP, Gurugram, Smt. Renu Sogan, senior officers from GMDA, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), Traffic Police and officials from DLF.
“Coordinated planning and efforts are being taken up by all concerned departments to strengthen flood management in Gurugram during the upcoming monsoon season. Remedial measures to be taken at critical locations where waterlogging has been reported in the past, have been issued to the respective local bodies to minimize inconveniences and enhance safety for the public. Several works pertaining to desilting of drains, installation of pumping machinery, construction of missing drainage links are already in progress,” said CEO GMDA.
It was submitted by GMDA officers that a dedicated Flood Control Office for the deployment of pumping machinery and manpower on critical locations has been set-up by GMDA, to monitor the on-ground situation during peak monsoon season in coordination with the MCG, NHAI, Traffic Police and other line departments. The Flood Control Office will be operational form 1st July and citizens can submit their waterlogging related grievances on the helpline numbers 1800-180-1817 and 0124-4753555. A total of 23 pump-sets are being installed on key hotspots such as Khandsa Chowk, Narsinghpur, Sector 102 near Basai, Bus Stand sector 10, Opposite AIPL Joy Street Mall in sector 67, Rajic Chowk, Tau Devi Lal Stadium and other identified locations by GMDA.
CEO GMDA issued instructions that the provision of additional back-up pumps, JCBs, DG Sets and other necessary machinery along with manpower must be ensured by the respective departments in the hotspot areas under their jurisdiction. Appropriate placement of all resources should be done before the onset of the monsoon season.
To ensure that no waterlogging occurs in the underpasses during heavy rainfall period, mock drills of the pumping machinery installed in 16 underpasses in the city has been carried out successfully by GMDA. The non-functional pump-sets detected during the mock drills at Iffco Chowk Underpass and Rajiv Chowk Underpass have been repaired by NHAI and are now working to their optimum capacity. It was also added that installation of pumps in the Vatika Chowk underpass by NHAI is in progress.
To combat waterlogging on Golf Course road; strengthening of check dams in the Aravalli’s has been carried out by GMDA and DLF teams. Furthermore, cleaning of the creeks by MCG to ensure free-flow of storm water from the master roads along this belt is nearing completion .
To address the waterlogging issue in the low-lying area of Narsinghpur, five pump-sets have been installed by GMDA and NHAI each to dewater the area during heavy rainfall. The matter of rampant waste dumping in the storm water drains along the National Highway was also discussed. CEO GMDA issued directions that a check on the dumping of garbage and inflow of untreated sewer is to be taken up on priority by MCG to prevent choking of the drains.
NHAI officials submitted that cleaning of culverts pertaining to master drains Leg 1, Leg 2 of GMDA under NH-48 has been completed. Additionally, desilting of surface drain around Rajiv Chowk & drains along NH-48 are also underway.
For enhanced safety, the underpasses and subways for pedestrians and non-motorised transport (NMT), will be closed during the monsoon season.
GMDA officials added that to address the issue of heavy water accumulation near Artemis hospital, Mayfield Garden and Good Earth Mall, the cleaning of the drains has been completed by GMDA which will provide relief to the citizens during this year’s monsoon season.
CEO GMDA directed MCG officials to shift the sewer line posing a hindrance in the ongoing drainage work being carried out by GMDA near Basai Chowk. The completion of the drainage network will curb waterlogging issues in sectors 9 and 10 and will be of high utility to the residents of these sectors.
He also issued directions to all departments that the ongoing work of desilting and cleaning of drains, connection of surface drains to master drains, cleaning of road gullies, installation of pumping machinery and all other temporary relief measures should be completed on war-footing to keep the city roads free of prolonged waterlogging concerns in the rainy season. He also gave instructions that all the departments should work in coordination with each other so that the issues are resolved timely.
