Haryana Initiates India’s First Cow Sanctuary in Tavru Village

In a pioneering move for cow conservation, the enchanting village of Hasanpur in Nuh district, Haryana, is set to witness the establishment of India’s first cow sanctuary. The initiative, approved by the local Panchayat, involves utilizing Panchayat land to create a natural habitat for cows, providing them with access to grazing areas, water, and a conducive environment. The unique project is being spearheaded by architect and conservationist Gurmeet Sangha Rai, who had previously played a pivotal role as the city anchor for the HRIDAY project.

The sanctuary, a crucial step towards protecting and nurturing cows, symbolizes a holistic approach to conservation. The Hasanpur Panchayat has granted its approval, and the visionary project has already received a green signal from the Municipal Commissioner and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority.

Gurmeet Rai shared insights into the conservation efforts, emphasizing the preservation of a 200-year-old historic gate and surrounding structures. The initiative extends beyond preserving heritage, focusing on revitalizing educational facilities and creating a harmonious space for the cows. The sanctuary will not only shelter the cows but also serve as a gene bank for their protection.

Addressing the Plight of Stray Cows in Urban Areas

The growing population of stray cows in urban areas, coupled with a shortage of cow shelters, has led to a lack of proper sustenance for these animals. Deprived of adequate grazing areas, cows often resort to consuming harmful substances like plastic, posing a threat to both the animals and humans. The cow sanctuary aims to address these challenges by providing a natural refuge, promoting environmental well-being, and preventing the adverse effects of stray cows consuming harmful substances.

Unlike conventional cow shelters, the sanctuary will not resemble a gaushala. It will accommodate cows that are no longer utilized by farmers or cattle herders, offering them shelter in exchange for a fee. This innovative approach aims to protect the cows, prevent them from ingesting harmful substances in urban areas, and create a sustainable model for their care.
