The Haryana transport department is gearing up for a monumental shift in the state’s transportation landscape with a plan to introduce 1,000 green-compliant buses, including electric and CNG variants. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s approval of the proposal marks a significant milestone towards sustainable mobility solutions.
Significance of the Kilometre Scheme
Under the kilometre scheme, private operators provide buses to Haryana roadways, with the transport department covering operational and maintenance costs based on predetermined rates per kilometre. This innovative approach aims to alleviate financial burdens on Haryana roadways and promote eco-friendly transportation alternatives.
Challenges and Opposition
Despite the government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency, challenges persist, with employee unions expressing concerns about hiring rates and privatization fears. However, stringent monitoring and regulatory measures aim to address these apprehensions and ensure the scheme’s smooth implementation.
Transition to Green Transportation
In alignment with environmental conservation efforts, Haryana plans to phase out BS III-compliant diesel buses, aiming for complete adoption of greener alternatives by October 2024. This transition will contribute to improved air quality and reduced emissions, aligning with broader sustainability goals.
Expansion of Bus Services
Beyond environmental initiatives, Haryana is expanding its bus services to facilitate religious pilgrimages, starting with operations between Haryana and Ayodhya. Commencing from Panchkula, this service will cater to devotees’ transportation needs, with plans for further expansion across other districts in response to public demand.
