Vinesh Phogat— Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 due to a weight issue, visited the Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar on Friday. Phogat, who was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling event, expressed a deep sense of peace and positivity during her visit to the sacred site.

“I feel very good after coming here. I am feeling very positive,” Phogat shared. “My prayer to Waheguru is to give me strength and courage. May all our loved ones be healthy, our country remain safe, and continue to progress. I have sought blessings from Baba to guide us and help us work in the right direction for humanity.”

Homecoming and Recognition

On Sunday, Phogat returned to her hometown of Jhajjar in Haryana, where she was warmly welcomed and felicitated for her performance at the Paris Olympics. The visit coincided with her birthday, adding a celebratory note to the occasion. “I am feeling good, my people are standing with me. Nothing is bigger than that,” Phogat remarked during the ceremony. “Who knows about the future… I am here today among my people, this is my medal… I am happy.”

Phogat was disqualified from competing in the final for exceeding the 50kg weight limit by just 100 grams. Despite reaching the gold medal match by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals, she was barred from the final, where she was scheduled to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States.

In the aftermath of her disqualification, Phogat filed a petition with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on August 7, seeking to be awarded the silver medal. However, the CAS dismissed her application, stating, “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed.”

Retirement Announcement

A day after her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat announced her decision to retire from wrestling, marking the end of a remarkable career. Despite the setback at the Paris Olympics, Phogat remains a celebrated figure in Indian sports, with her visit to the Golden Temple symbolizing her search for peace and resilience in the face of challenges.
