The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) to requisition over 82,000 central forces personnel within 24 hours for deployment in the panchayat polls.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam noted that the SEC had demanded 82,000 central forces personnel during the 2013 panchayat polls in the state. The SEC informed the court that it has sought six companies of central forces so far for the July 8 panchayat elections.
Noting that the number of districts in West Bengal has increased from 17 in 2013 to 22 at present, and also that there has been an increase in the number of voters in these 10 years, the court directed the SEC to submit sufficient information in 24 hours. Force central personnel in numbers.
The court directed that the number of companies to be sought should be more than those in the 2013 elections.
The court said that any attempt to make the order unworkable could have adverse consequences.
The SEC’s counsel submitted that whatever the court feels would be sufficient, the demand for the same would be immediately sent to the Central Government.
