Himachal Pradesh News: Devastating Kullu Landslide; 7 Buildings Collapse as Rains Wreak Havoc

Himachal Pradesh News: In the Kullu area of Himachal Pradesh, up to seven structures collapsed as a result of a landslip caused by heavy rain. While another building in the region is still identified as being in risk, a video of the incident shows seven structures next to a bus station collapse. According to an official named Ani Naresh Verma, the buildings had developed cracks as a result of the prolonged rain and had been evacuated three days prior. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red and orange alert, additional landslides and persistent rains claimed the lives of 13 more people. Twelve people lost their life in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday as a result of cloudbursts and landslides brought on by heavy rain. According to officials, numerous homes were damaged and over 400 additional roads were closed.

Red and Orange Warnings as Himachal Districts Brace for Torrential Rains

In six districts of the state, including Shimla, the IMD issued a red alert, foreseeing “heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy rains” during the course of the following 24 hours. The nine districts of Shimla, Sirmaur, Kangra, Chamba, Mandi, Hamirpur, Solan, Bilaspur, and Kullu are now under a moderate-to-high flash flood warning. The districts of Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur were included in the red alert warning. Additionally, the weather service issued an orange warning for Thursday’s expected heavy to very heavy rains. In Shimla, Mandi, and Solan districts, all schools and colleges have been closed for two days starting on Wednesday due to the severe rainfall.

Stranded Vehicles and Highway Damage in Wake of Heavy Downpours

After the Kullu-Mandi road was damaged by excessive rain on Wednesday, hundreds of vehicles were left stranded in the Kullu area. Also damaged was the other route via Pandoh. Work to remove debris was in progress. According to information from the state emergency operation centre, the impacted highways include National Highway 21 (Mandi-Kullu road) and NH 154 (Mandi-Pathankot). Following three significant bouts of heavy rain that left a trail of devastation and death, a total of 709 roadways in the state are currently closed. As a precaution, individuals are being evacuated from many homes because they have developed cracks. Up to 120 people have perished in rain-related accidents in Himachal Pradesh this month, bringing the state’s death toll from the monsoon season to 238 overall, with 40 still missing.
