Here are the top ten facts about this major event.
- The late Virbhadra Singh, a former chief minister and a veteran of the Congress, and his wife Pratibha Singh vigorously lobbied for Mr. Sukhu, 58, to be appointed to the top position.
- In staking out the position of Chief Minister, Ms. Singh claimed that it would be “a tragedy” to exclude Virbhadra Singh’s family because the Congress ran and won the elections in his name.
- However, according to party sources, she does not have the support of the party’s 40 newly elected MLAs, which hurts her prospects.
- Ms Singh informed reporters this night that she agreed with the high command’s choice of Mr. Sukhu. The MLAs had previously requested that the Congress high command choose the party leader for the legislature who will also serve as the Chief Minister.
- Former state Congress president Mr. Sukhu, who is reported to be close to party leader Rahul Gandhi, did not get along well with Virbhadra Singh, who served as chief minister six times and died last year.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s background
- The son of a bus driver and a four-time MLA, Mr. Sukhu began his political career in Shimla on the campus of Himachal Pradesh University. He ascended the ranks and eventually became the state unit leader of the Congress students’ wing.
- His common background, which stands in sharp contrast to Virbhadra Singh’s royal heritage, assisted him in creating an image of a self-made leader who spent four decades working at every level of the party.
- Mr. Sukhu, who has a legal degree, is regarded as a member of Team Rahul. At a time when Mr. Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” has working at the grassroots as a major topic, the choice of a worker-turned-leader over royal inheritors is also appropriate messaging on the part of the Congress.
- In an attempt to strike a balance, the Congress has picked Mukesh Agnihotri, another candidate for the position of Chief Minister and a protégé of Virbhadra Singh, for the position of Deputy Chief Minister.
- While Pratibha Singh is the state Congress president, the high command is attempting to appease them by considering Vikramaditya Singh for a key cabinet position.
