Jaipur News: The prices of vegetables have been soaring in India and is causing widespread worry for ordinary citizens. The inflation has put a burden on budgeting of middle income households. tomatoes which are a staple item in India has seen the most dramatic rise, The cost of tomato is priced over rupees 100 in most parts of the country. The item has become a precious commodity and in a new incident has become a target of bulk thieves.
Two thieves were captured on CCTV in the vegetable market Mohana Mandi stealing 150 kg of tomatoes and 350 kg ginger form a shop in the Mohana Mandi wholesale market. The prices of tomatoes have been skyrocketing and is posted at 113 rupees per kg in Jaipur. The cost of stolen tomatoes and ginger is priced around 56,000 rupees.
Stealing carats and sacks
On July 8, two thieves entered the Mandi around 3:00 am – 4:00 am. They docked 6 carats of tomatoes from Hameed Qureshi’s godown. After loading the goods in pickup they stole 2 sacks of ginger which were lying outside the store.
Rahul Tanwar, President of Fruit Vegetable Market Muhana Terminal stated,”We have told the police many times about this, but no one listens. There are many doors to enter and exit the vegetable market. which are often open. In such a situation, thieves steal vegetables and sell them in the market.”
He also added that due to inflated price of tomatoes, they have become a target of thieves. Vegetables are being stolen because they are expensive.
Vegetable prices are skyrocketing
The prices of vegetables in country are on a constant rise which are causing much hardship for people, especially the middle and low income households. The prices of onion, ginger, garlic, cucumbers, and green chillies have also seen a dramatic rise in prices. The arrival of monsoon later than usual has caused flooding situation in many parts of the country and has also damaged a wide variety of crops. India is renowned for its cast agricultural produce but multiple factors are contributing to price rise in vegetables. The rising fuel prices have directly surged the cost of vegetables as transportation has become more expensive. Aside from these demand-supply imbalance, pest decay also contribute to imbalance in vegetable market.
