Jammu and Kashmir Election Results 2024: NC-Congress Alliance Crosses Majority Line as Key Leaders Trail

Jammu and Kashmir Election Results 2024: The process of tallying votes for the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Election Results has commenced. The Jammu region is giving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a lot of support. In the Kashmir Valley, on the other hand, the National Conference (NC) is in charge. Early trends point to the NC-Congress partnership going beyond the line of majority, indicating that they could have a strong chance of forming the government in Jammu & Kashmir. Major leaders from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP, such as Iltija Mufti and Ravinder Raina are lagging behind in their respective areas.

BJP’s Ravinder Raina Trails in Nowshera, PDP’s Iltija Mufti Faces Tough Competition

According to the latest data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Ravinder Raina, the Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief, is trailing in the Nowshera constituency. On the other hand, Iltija Mufti, representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, is also struggling in the Srigufwara-Bijbehara seat, a traditional stronghold of the Mufti family. Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah, another former Chief Minister, is performing well and is leading in both Budgam and Ganderbal constituencies. However, Sajad Gani Lone, leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC), is trailing in Kupwara but leading in Handwara, making his position uncertain.

First Election in Jammu and Kashmir After Article 370’s Abrogation

This election is historic. It marks the first assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. This move revoked the region’s special status. It is also the first election since Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The last assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir was held in 2014. This makes the 2024 elections the first assembly polls in ten years. The gap between the two elections, along with the changes in the political structure after the abrogation of Article 370, adds to the significance of the 2024 elections in the region.

There were three phases to the voting process for the 90 assembly seats in Jammu & Kashmir: September 18, September 25, and October 1, 2024. The voter turnout was recorded at 63.88%, up from 58.58% in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, despite the complicated political climate. This turnout was marginally lower than the 65.52% seen in the assembly elections of 2014, nonetheless.
