Sachin Pilot: The Congress is currently dealing with a significant issue in its Rajasthan branch even though it is in a festive mood following a significant victory in Karnataka. On Monday, Congress leader Sachin Pilot threatened to start statewide protests if his party’s government in Rajasthan and its Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot did not address the corruption allegations within 15 days.
Sachin Pilot threatens state-wide protests
A five-day “Jan Sangharsh Yatra” was organised by Sachin Pilot as a form of protest against the Gehlot administration’s alleged passivity over corruption allegations against the previous BJP administration of Vasundhara Raje. The “Jan Sangharsh Yatra” that Sachin Pilot started on May 11 came to an end on Monday. Sachin Pilot declared in Jaipur, ‘I will hold a ‘andolan’ with the public in the entire state if our demands are not met by the end of this month. We just observed a Gandhian-style fast; if the corruption allegations are not addressed, we will spread the movement throughout the state. Every village and hamlet will be visited,’ he declared.
Pilot’s retaliation against Gehlot administration draws criticism from Congress leadership
It all began when Rajasthan’s chief minister Ashok Gehlot alleged that MLAs involved in the 2020 uprising had received funding from the BJP. Pilot was fired from his position as deputy chief minister in Rajasthan when 19 MLAs, including himself, demanded a change in the state’s political structure. Pilot has frequently retaliated against the Gehlot administration by bringing up the subject of corruption. The state committee for the Congress had then stated that Pilot’s protest was against the party’s interests and that he should handle whatever disagreements he had with the Ashok Ghelot administration internally. The Tonk MLA’s dharna had drawn heavy criticism from the Congress leadership as well. It said that any demonstration against the government of the country amounted to anti-party activities.

Congress Leadership Struggles with Schism Between Gehlot and Pilot in Rajasthan
Pilot was referred to as a “huge asset” by the Congress high leadership, who urged the leader to avoid taking any actions that would be detrimental to the party’s interests. Due to internal disputes, the party high command has had a difficult time over the previous four years. Since their respective parties’ victory in the 2018 assembly election, Gehlot and Pilot have been at odds for the position of chief executive. The conflict between the two leaders grew worse as Pilot and his 18 allies among the MLAs rebelled against Gehlot, causing a schism to develop. Now, Pilot cancelling the 5-day march and his ongoing criticism of the Gehlot administration don’t augur well for the party as it gears up for the Rajasthan Assembly election later this year.
