Kanwar Yatra 2024: A recent order by the Uttar Pradesh government that all shops along the Kanwar route must put up signboards has kicked off a major row. The Yogi Adityanath government explained that it was doing so to “respect the sentiments” of the kanwariyas who are undertaking the Kanwar Yatra 2024. Yet, this has already come under attack from political opponents – including NDA allies and rivals.
Controversial Directive Sparks Debate
The head of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Jayant Chaudhary—a major party in western Uttar Pradesh—came out strong against the directive. To the outspoken leader Chaudhary, the policy stood “beyond comprehension.” He asked whether it should now be made compulsory to wear nameplates on kurtas, implying that the directive was an unnecessary intertwining of religion and caste with mundane life.
He said during an interaction with the media recently, “Kanwar Yatra is a religious event; service and devotion are above personal identity like religion and caste.” He reiterated that putting up nameplates doesn’t go with the spirit of the pilgrimage, where faith should be the motto and not distinguishing shopkeepers with their names. Among others, he had commented on the impracticability of the policy, as international brands like McDonald’s and Burger King would definitely not comply easily with this mandate.
Jayant Chaudhary’s Strong Opposition
The Yogi government’s decision to have nameplates on shops along the Kanwar route was couched as a logistical move to facilitate the Yatra, but it is a policy that has generated much skepticism and opposition. Detractors argued that instead of providing order and respect for pilgrims, this could enhance communal tensions.
The controversy over the nameplate direction brings out the general broader debate at the junction of religious practices and administrative decisions. The policy’s reception simply showed how much the government has to contend with balancing logistical concerns against communal sensitivities.
