Karnataka Election 2023: In the Karnataka Assembly election 2023, the Congress has easily earned a majority. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Congress has won the elections, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost Karnataka after the hard work. The BJP was anticipated to give the Congress a tough fight, but it fell short. Several incumbent ministers including the Assembly Speaker of the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP administration were defeated in the election. The only big setback for the Congress was the defeat of veteran leader Jagadish Shettar from the Hubli-Darwad Central seat.
Jagadish Shettar (Congress)
Former Karnataka chief minister and Lingayat leader Jagadish Shettar, who defected from the BJP and joined the Congress before the state assembly elections, was defeated by the BJP’s Mahesh Tenginkai in the VIP seat of Hubli-Darwad Central by over 30,000 votes. According to the EC results, Tenginkai of the BJP received 64,910 votes, while Shettar of the Congress received 29,340 votes.
Shettar, a six-term MLA, joined the Congress last month after the BJP denied him a ticket to run in Hubli-Dharwad Central. Before leaving the BJP, Shettar claimed “ill-treatment” by the party.
C T Ravi (BJP)
C T Ravi, a well-known BJP leader and four-time member of the assembly from the Chikkamaguluru assembly constituency, ran for the seat again but lost to HD Thammaiah of the Congress and Thimmashetty of the Janata Dal Secular.
By a margin of 26,314 votes, BJP candidate CT Ravi defeated Congress candidate Shankar BL to win the Chikmagalur Assembly Election in 2018. Ravi has continued to gain support from the area since that time.
Along with Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, other BJP mainstays who lost the election were B Sriramulu, K Sudhakar, J C Madhuswamy, Govind Karjol, M T B Nagaraj, and K C Narayana Gowda.
