In response to rumours that HD Kumaraswamy’s party would play a significant role in the case of a hung assembly, the Congress denied reaching out to the party a day before the results of the Karnataka election.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, predicted that his party would secure a “thumping majority” and that it would base its decisions on the results of tomorrow’s vote.
“The numbers will tell us what to do,” Mr Kharge told NDTV, questioned on the possibility of an “Operation Lotus” – the term used by the opposition to describe what they allege is the BJP strategy of gaining power by inducing MLAs to switch sides. “We will take a call after the results,” he said.
After a leader said the party has determined who to partner with, the head of the Congress denied that he is in talks with the JDS. “Nobody. Nobody is receiving our outreach, Mr. Kharge affirmed.
In the polls that were conducted on Wednesday, many exit polls indicated that the Congress would have a majority.
However, a split decision has not been ruled out, opening the door for the JDS to act as the decider. The BJP became the single-largest party in 2018, however it was not able to win a majority. A coalition government between the Congress and JDS collapsed 14 months later as a result of widespread BJP defections.
There was intense speculation about a possible alliance between the BJP and the JDS after a JDS leader indicated on Thursday that the party had received inquiries from both the Congress and the BJP and that a decision had been made.
Tanveer Ahmed, who was in Singapore, made the remark instead of former chief minister Mr. Kumaraswamy. “The choice has been made. It is taken. When the time is appropriate, we will make the announcement to the general public, Ahmed had added.
