Kerala Doctor’s Tragic Suicide Prompts Probe into Alleged Dowry Demands

In a deeply distressing incident, a 26-year-old doctor identified as Dr Shahana has died by suicide in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation, with alleged connections to dowry demands by her boyfriend’s family. State health minister Veena George has initiated an inquiry into the matter.

The incident unfolded as Dr Shahana, pursuing postgraduate studies at the surgery department of Government Medical College, reportedly faced emotional distress linked to dowry demands. The police have registered a case against her boyfriend under charges of abetment to suicide and dowry prevention laws, leading to his detention.

Dr Shahana’s family alleges that her boyfriend’s family demanded substantial dowry, including 150 gold sovereigns, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car. Unable to meet these demands, the wedding was purportedly called off, intensifying the emotional turmoil for the young doctor.

A suicide note found at Dr Shahana’s residence hinted at the stress and anguish she may have experienced. The health minister has directed the state Women and Child Development department to submit a report on the allegations of dowry demand as part of the ongoing investigation.

The tragic incident underscores the serious consequences of dowry-related pressures within relationships, prompting a closer examination of the circumstances leading to Dr Shahana’s untimely death.
