Kerala: The Kerala government has opposed the proposal to raise the marriage age for women from 18 to 21. Arguing that since they can exercise their right to vote at age 18. Delaying their wedding until age 21 is unfair. According to those with knowledge of the development, the National Commission for Women wrote the state’s department of women and child development in response to a letter seeking the state’s view. The letter further noted that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (Pocso) Act of 2012 established the age of consent for homosexual relationships between people of different sexes as 18 years old.

But the government claimed that it was necessary to protect women’s overall health and help them reach adulthood by the age of 21.
