Kerala News: The Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the central government to officially change the state’s name to ‘Keralam’. This marks the second time the Assembly has passed such a resolution, following technical recommendations from the Union Home Ministry on the initial submission.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved the resolution, emphasizing the need for the state’s name to reflect its Malayalam designation, ‘Keralam’. He urged the union government to amend the name in all languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Historical and Cultural Context
In his address, CM Vijayan highlighted that the name ‘Keralam’ has been in use among Malayalam-speaking communities since the time of the national freedom struggle. “The name of our state is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. This Assembly requests the Centre to take immediate steps to amend it as ‘Keralam’ under Article 3 of the Constitution and have it renamed as ‘Keralam’ in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” he stated.
Bipartisan Support
The resolution received support from both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF). Although UDF legislator N Shamsudeen proposed some amendments to modify the structure of the resolution, these were ultimately rejected by the government. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the assembly, with Speaker A N Shamseer declaring its acceptance.
Next Steps
This resolution, following its predecessor passed in August last year, reflects the persistent demand from Kerala’s lawmakers to align the state’s official name with its cultural and linguistic identity. The Assembly Secretariat noted that the initial resolution required technical adjustments as per the Union Home Ministry’s review, which have now been addressed.
The unanimous adoption of the resolution underscores Kerala’s unified stance on the matter, as the state awaits the central government’s action to formalize the name change to ‘Keralam’.
