Lucknow News: IIT Roorkee’s team of experts has developed a comprehensive stormwater drainage blueprint, which will be put into action within the city to provide a lasting solution to the issue of waterlogging resulting from intense rainfall.

Under the directive of Divisional Commissioner Roshan Jacob, a collaborative effort involving experts from IIT Roorkee, as well as teams from the Lucknow Development Authority, municipal corporation, irrigation department, PWD, and government construction corporation, commenced survey work on Tuesday. This initiative was prompted by the significant waterlogging affecting two-thirds of the city following Monday’s rainfall, prompting the need for a comprehensive master plan to address the issue.
The primary reason behind waterlogging, as identified by experts, is the reverse flow of water in drains caused by elevated water levels during the rainy season. To formulate a comprehensive stormwater drainage strategy for the city, the IIT team will undertake a hydrological examination, topographical survey, and utilise drone technology for assessment.
Extensive plan underway
The team has also reached out to the irrigation department to obtain drain discharge details into the Gomti River, and has requested drainage network information from other relevant departments. The Divisional Commissioner of Lucknow has issued directives to both the Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Jal Nigam to collaboratively establish a thorough City Drainage Master Plan, aimed at averting future incidents of waterlogging.
Emphasising the necessity for close coordination between the two agencies, the commissioner urged officials to adopt proactive measures for drain clearance and efficient water management during heavy rainfall. Additionally, he underscored the significance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene to prevent waterlogging-related disease outbreaks. In a concerted effort, a joint team will be formed to mitigate the risk of dengue and malaria outbreaks.
