Lucknow News: Archaeologists have unearthed a 9th-century sculpture of Lord Ganesha, in a dancing pose and adorned with a third eye on the forehead. This ancient artefact was discovered in Kampila, Farrukhabad, and is now prominently displayed in the archaeology gallery within the state museum located in Lucknow Zoo.

Crafted from sandstone, this sculpture portrays Lord Ganesha with eight hands, each grasping various items, such as a mace and a laddoo (sweet ball). Renu Dwivedi, Director of Department of Archaelogy, UP, stated, “The tusk of Lord Ganesha is twisted towards the left and the body can clearly be seen in a dancing posture.”
In addition to this, the museum houses a collection of various artefacts related to Lord Ganesha, which visitors can explore. These artifacts are on display for public viewing, especially during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which commences on September 19th. According to legend, Lord Ganesha is revered as the deity of intellect and wisdom and is believed to be the offspring of goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.
More artefacts on show
Another noteworthy artefact in the collection is a bronze sculpture depicting Lord Ganesha alongside Goddess Laxmi, dating back to the 17th to 18th century AD, and originating from Nepal. Assistant director Minakshi Khemka said, “Goddess Laxmi can be seen sitting on Lord Ganesha’s right thigh. The sculpture also has an owl and a mouse, the vehicles of goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha respectively. While Goddess Laxmi can be seen wearing lower attire and stole, she is shown wearing jewellery and a crown. On the other hand, Lord Ganesha is holding Vaijantimala, lotus and laddoo. He is wearing a high crown and other jewelleries.”
