Another cheetah died on Friday in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. The cheetah who died this time was Suraj, who was brought from South Africa to Kuno. The male cheetah Tejas had died three days before this. Since March this year, the number of cheetahs who have died in Sheopur district park has gone up to 8. A forest department official said that Suraj was found lying in Masavani Beat of Palpur East Forest Range by a surveillance team on Friday morning. They told that when they went near him, they saw that insects were hovering around his neck but he then got up and ran away.
A team of veterinary doctors and forest officials reached the spot and the leopard was found dead at around 9 am, the official said. He said, “This is the first time that a leopard has died in a free range. Suraj had injury marks on his back and neck. With this, 8 cheetahs including three cubs born from Namibian cheetah ‘Jwala’ have died in KNP since March. This has dealt a blow to the ‘Project Cheetah’ launched by the Modi government in September last year with much fanfare as part of the plan to resettle cheetahs in the country.
A cheetah had died 3 days ago as well
Earlier on July 11, male leopard Tejas had died. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Wildlife JS Chauhan told that about 4 years old Tejas died in KNP probably due to mutual fight. The official said that the cheetah brought from South Africa to settle cheetahs in the country was in an enclosure at the time of the incident. At around 11 am on Tuesday morning, some injury marks were seen on Tejas’s neck in enclosure number-6, after which veterinarians were called. It is said that after getting proper clearance, a team of veterinary doctors reached the spot around 2 pm, but the cheetah was found dead.
